Mayor BN Manjunath buys time from Bingipura villagers, BBMP trucks to roll in from today

Mayor tried to convince the villagers to allow BBMP trucks to dump garbage in the landfill

As the latest garbage crisis hit the city, Mayor B.N. Manjunath Reddy met the villagers of S.Bingipura in Anekal, where the BBMP has set up a landfill. Accompanied by a team of BBMP officials and Deputy Mayor S.P Hemalatha, he tried to convince the villagers to allow the BBMP trucks to dump garbage in the landfill.

Addressing the media later, he said that the villagers have been convinced, but the BBMP needs more time to completely stop sending garbage to the landfill.

He said, “The villagers have demanded that basic infrastructure like a new borewell, a water plant and asphalted roads should be provided to the village. The BBMP officials explained that work orders to the tune of Rs 15 crore were entrusted to the KRIDL and the agency would soon take up the works.” The villagers, however, demanded that the BBMP should immediately stop sending garbage trucks to the landfill. The BBMP officials sought time, saying they have not yet identified an alternative site to dump the garbage.

Mr Reddy said, “A garbage processing plant in Chikka Nagamangala is under construction and will be functional by the end of this month. We have sought time until then and the Gram Panchayat leaders agreed to give us more time. The villagers, however, were a little skeptical. The BBMP trucks will start going to Bingipura from Monday morning.”
