100 firemen fight for 10 hours to douse flames

A security guard spotted a small fire near the generator and informed the factory workers

BENGALURU: A massive fire broke out at a three-storeyed polymer unit at Doddakallasandra near Konanakunte Cross on Kanakapura Road late on Saturday night. Hundred firefighters struggled for over 10 hours in a night-long operation before containing the fire, only in the early hours of Sunday.

The fire, which is suspected to have been triggered by an electrical short-circuit around 10 pm, erupted on the ground floor and subsequently spread to all the the three floors of Kalyani Polymer unit.

Fire Department officials said that around seven-eight workers were in the unit at the time of accident, and all of them were rescued.

Over 20 fire tenders, including, ALC, aerial ladder and rescue vans were pressed into service soon after an alert was made to the fire services control room.

A security guard spotted a small fire near the generator and informed the factory workers. By the time they arrived to put out the flames it had already turned into a massive blaze.

They immediately called the fire control room following which over 20 fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

Raw materials, wooden furniture, plastic bags, and packaging material worth approximately Rs 80 lakh were gutted.

The owner of the polymer unit, Bhaskar, too had rushed to the spot. The oil used to manufacture polymer products only added fuel to the fire, making difficult for fire fighters to extinguish it.
