More trouble in turban land?
Prabhudheva’s Singh Is Bliing was recently under fire from Sikh religious groups that took offence to certain stunts and antics shown by Akshay Kumar’s character in the film. Another film that is treading in the same territory is Deepa Mehta’s Beeba Boys. Says a source, “In Beeba Boys, we see a Sikh character using his holy kirpan (knife) to slash and murder a victim. The shot was removed from the trailer. But the scene is very much there in the film. There is bound to be trouble in India for this.”
Deepa, however, is no stranger to controversies. Her Fire about a lesbian relationship between two lonely daughters-in-law of a business family in Delhi, 1947 Earth about communal riots during the Partition and Water about the widows of Varanasi rubbed fundamentalists the wrong way too. Deepa’s last film Midnight’s Children also got itself into a serious spot. Not too many know this, but Beeba Boys was to be originally made with Akshay instead of Randeep Hooda in the lead.
