I am mentally prepared to act now: Kunal Kohli
Newly turned actor, Kunal feels this is the right time for him to debut as an actor
Mumbai: In a conversation, Kunal Kohli talks about his next film ‘Phir Se’ which marks his debut as an actor, his experience working with Jennifer Winget and more.
Did you pay 25 lacks to Jyoti Kapoor who sued you for stealing her script?
It was an unfortunate incident. I won’t say I paid compensation to her but it was more like a settlement between us. I don’t want to drag it.
After being an ace director for more than a decade, how did you think about acting?
I am obsessed about films. Be it direction or acting, I enjoy the evolutionary process. I thought this was the right time to act in the films and also I was mentally prepared to act on big screen. I contacted Barry John and took a professional training. Moreover, I suited the role in ‘Phir Se’ so I took it up. It’s been a great journey so far.
What took you so long to act in a film?
I don’t think I was ready for any roles I had written so far. I had better actors to play them. It’s all about the role. I had always focused on directing films but now I can focus on acting too. I feel, these days industry and the viewers are much evolved and are more accepting.
Why did you cast Jennifer Winget as a leading lady? How was the experience?
I wanted someone known but on small screen. I never wanted to overshadow my individuality under a bigger female lead in my very first film. Just like Farhan worked with Prachi Desai in ‘Rock On’ and later with Deepika and Priyanka Chopra, I too wanted to follow the same footsteps. I felt that Jennifer and me are very similar in terms of popularity. She is very beautiful and hard working girl. We share a great chemistry in ‘Phir Se’.
Any special anecdote you want to share?
When I was about to begin “Phir Se’, I met Kabir Khan at the airport lounge. He gave me a piece of advice. He said, “Since I have known you as a director and now you are debuting as an actor, never bother about anything around you when you are giving shot”. I always remember his words.
When are you directing your next venture?
Yes, I am working on a script but it’s little too early to talk about it.
