Mumbai body seeks ban on Prophet film

We have mailed copy of the fatwa to A.R. Rahman, says head of Raza Academy

Mumbai: Mumbai-based religious body Raza Academy is planning to meet home minister Rajnath Singh and minister of external affairs Sushma Swaraj to ensure controversial film Muhammed: Messenger of God is not released in India.

It was due to the Raza Academy’s query that a fatwa was issued against renowned music composer A.R. Rahman and Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi for the upcoming film. Raza Academy had put forth a query to have the religious position on the recently released Iranian film on Prophet Mohammed outlined, following which a group of Sunni clerics issued a fatwa.

The fatwa said that Prophet Mohammed has declared making pictures and keeping them as forbidden and showed great displeasure at such acts.

It says that people who make pictures or movies on the Prophet would be punished on doomsday and hence people should stay away from these activities.

“We have mailed copy of the fatwa to A.R. Rahman on his e-mail, but have not received a response from him so far,” said Saeed Noori, head of Raza Academy.
