Hyderabad: The spate of suicides by farmers in Telangana state continued with four more committing suicide in various districts on Saturday due to crop failure and indebtedness.
While two farmers committed suicide in Medak district, one farmer each ended his life in Karimnagar and Mahbubnagar districts.
Kummari Shankaraiah, 42, a native of Venkatraopeta in Thoguta mandal in Medak district, hanged himself at his house.
He had borrowed money from private money lenders and dug four borewells, which failed to bear water. Unable to face this, he ended his life, his family members said.
Pulaboyina Ramesh, 38, from Chegunta mandal in Medak district, committed suicide, by consuming pesticide.
Deshaveni Narsaiah, 45, of Ragojipeta in Medipally mandal in Karimnagar district, commmitted suicide by consuming pesticide due to crop failure and debts.
Srinivas Reddy, 55, a farmer from Gangapur villge in Jadcherla mandal in Mahbubnagar district, consumed pesticide following crop loss.
He had borrowed money from private money lenders to sow crop on his three-acre land. The crops got damaged due to the dry spell.
Uttam calls TS heartless
Accusing the state government for its utter negligence and lack of humanity towards suicides of farmers, TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Saturday appealed to the government to introduce a comprehensive policy on the issue. He visited Sadhuvalli villige in Yadagirigutta of Nalgonda district on Saturday to console families of suicide victims.
Speaking on the occasion, he said the state government was not even consoling families and announced Rs 1 lakh cash assistance to family members
