Thieves get the better of police in Kerala
Rs 142 crore worth of assets stolen last year
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Properties worth Rs 142 crore were reportedly stolen in the state during 2014, of which those worth Rs 21 crore only could be recovered. The rate of recovery is only 15.1 percent, which is below the national average of 21 percent.
All over the country, properties worth Rs 7,515 crore were stolen last year, of which only those worth Rs 1,575 crore could be recovered, according to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau.
In Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the recovery rate is 33.4 percent and 66 percent respectively. In Karnataka, properties worth Rs 286 crore were stolen last year, of which those worth Rs 95 crore were recovered.
In Tamil Nadu , the value of stolen property was Rs 151 crore and that of recovered properties Rs 99 crore. The recovery rate in many other states like Maharashtra and Bihar are also below the national average.
Police sources said that the chances of recovering stolen properties in a robbery case become bleak day by day after the occurrence of the crime.
“In most robberies, the stolen properties are disposed of through well-structured rackets which would in turn deface them swiftly. While vehicles are often dismantled, gold ornaments would be melted. Hence, it would be difficult to recover the stolen articles in real forms,” said a police officer.
As many as 2,573 property theft cases in Kerala were reported from residential premises, which involved properties worth Rs 22 crore.
Among the stolen properties in the state, 1,467 were vehicles, 1,254 two- wheelers, 113 four-wheelers, 23 goods carriers, three heavy vehicles and 56 three-wheelers.
