Fish could be nature’s antidepressant, scientists say
It may even alter the structure of brain membranes
People who have a diet rich with seafood are less likely to be depressed, a new study says. It also suggested that omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may alter the structure of brain membranes, reports the Daily Mail.
Researchers examined all relevant worldwide research that studied the association between fish consumption and the risk of depression published between 2001 and 2014. It was found that men who had a diet rich in fish had their risk of depression reduced by a fifth (20 per cent) while women saw their risk decreased by a sixth (16 per cent). The results were based on 16 articles that included 26 studies and involved 150, 278 participants.
This study was published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health.
