Funds sanctioned for nursing college hostel
Rs 36.04 L released for clearing contractor’s arrears and '89L for completing remaining work
Kochi: The students of the Government Nursing College, Ernakulam, can heave a sigh of relief at long last. Their recourse to agitation for securing a hostel has found result. The state government has issued an order signed by deputy secretary N.B. Balakrishnan sanctioning the amount required for completing the works of the hostel.
The order reached the nursing college principal and the Ernakulam Medical College special officer on Tuesday.
The hostel is required for housing 240 girls who are studying in six batches in the college. Currently only 50 have temporary accommodation arranged at the guest house while the rest have been forced to seek accommodation outside. There are only seven boys studying in the nursing college.
The new hostel can accommodate all the girl students and 90 percent construction of it is over. However, the government was delaying the remaining construction which forced the students to resort to agitation.
An amount of Rs 36.04 lakh has been sanctioned for clearing the arrears to the contractor and Rs 89 lakh for completing the remaining construction.
This money will flow from the administrative fund of the Ernakulam Government Medical College. Special officer M.K. Kuttappan has been authorized to release the sum.
In another development, the state health department issued an order making the stipend of house surgeons at the EMC equivalent to that of house surgeons in other medical colleges.
As per this, their stipend will be Rs 20,000 per month. So far this was Rs 12,000. House surgeons had planned an agitation from September 10 to get the stipend raised and had petitioned Mr Hibi Eden MLA in this regard.
