Bus stand near Ernakulam Government Medical College to be a reality soon
The chairman said that the bus stand would be constructed in five months
KOCHI: Steps to fulfill the most urgent need of the fast developing area of Kochi will be initiated in a few days. If Kalamassery Municipal chairman Jamal Manakkadan is to be believed, the foundation stone for the bus stand to be constructed by the municipality near Ernakulam Government Medical College will be laid by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in the third week of this month.
The chairman said that the bus stand would be constructed in five months. The old firms dotting this interior area of Kalamassery are HMT, Naval Armament Depot, Kendriya Vidyalaya, government polytechnic, women’s polytechnic, government ITI, women’s ITI, Food Craft Institute, Productivity Council and St Paul’s College.
The firms that have come up in the same belt in recent times are NUALS, XIME, St Paul’s International School, Government Medical College and the Startup Village.
The firms on the anvil in the area are the Kochi Cancer Centre and the Innovation Zone where 12 incubators worth Rs 150 crore will be set up. The Science City too is coming in the area.
Despite having such a high concentration of institutions, the area was bereft of proper public conveyance and the major hindrance for this was the absence of a bus stand.
Identifying the urgency and importance of the need, the Kalamassery Municipality came forward to build a bus stand and put pressure for over a year on KINFRA to part with land for the purpose.
Finally on the intervention of the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, KINFRA parted with 50 cents of land near the medical college.
“We have already finished the e-tender for the bus stand project which costs Rs 3.35 crore. KITCO is doing the design, plan, technical and tender works. We have requested KINFRA to give an additional 20 cents to make the bus stand a comprehensive one,” Jamal Manakkadan told DC on Thursday.
