Mumbai: Officials from the British Consulate on Wednesday approached the prison authorities at the Byculla women’s district jail in Central Mumbai asking for their permission to meet Indrani Mukerjea to see if she requires any legal assistance.
Indrani, after her marriage to Peter Mukerjea, holds a UK passport and is a British national. Indrani is presently lodged there after the Bandra magistrate’s court remanded her to judicial custody.
The jail authorities have asked the consulate officials to come back with written permission from the Centre. As per the rules, any consulate officials require orders from the foreigners division of ministry of home affairs (MHA) to meet their nationals lodged in jails here.
