Bountiful rain: Hyderabad now in safe zone

Hyderabad: The unexpected rain in the catchments of Tungabhadra and Krishna rivers have pushed Hyderabad’s drinking water availability to the “safe zone”.

Officials now say that the city will not face a problem till the onset of summer 2016 thanks to increased storage at Srisailam Dam. Srisailam storage went up by 7.2 TMC ft in two days and is expected to gain another 3 TMC ft by Friday night.

“This 10 TMC ft of water, which will reach Nagarjunasagar in due course, will be sufficient to meet the city’s requirements till next summer, and we are expecting more due to continuous rainfall in the catchment,” said Mr V. Satyanarayana, executive director of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Board.

“From a crisis zone, we have now entered a safe zone,” the official added. There has also been an increase of 0.5 ft in the water level of Osmansagar (Gandipet), one of the sources of the city.
