Eating apples may slow down ageing, research says

It's because a chemical in the peel prevents muscle wastage

A new study tells us that including apples in your diet could keep you looking younger for a long time, the Daily Mail reports. This is because a chemical found in the fruit’s peel prevents muscle wasting.

Scientists from the University of Iowa said that both apple peels and green tomatoes have natural chemical properties that can turn elderly people’s muscles into those of a young adult after just two months of treatment. A protein called ATF4, which changes the formation of genes and starves muscles of proteins, causes muscle wastage in old age. Researchers say that the two natural compounds present in these foods could reduce ATF4 activity.

Christopher Adams, professor of internal medicine and lead author of the study, told the specialist Journal of Biological Chemistry that one of those compounds is ursolic acid, which is found in apple peel and the other is tomatidine, which comes from green tomatoes.
