University of Hyderabad teachers go on hunger strike

Protest ‘racial bias’ against Professor
Hyderabad: Condemning the racial and gender discrimination against Prof. Gracious Temsen, faculty members of the University of Hyderabad have announced an indefinite relay hunger strike from Thursday. Two faculty members will sit on strike near the DST bus stop of UoH every day from 9 am to 9 pm.
“In spite of having made repeated attempts to have a dialogue with the administration to address the fundamental injustice of an action such as an illegal raid at the residence of Prof. Temsen, there hasn’t been any redress. In fact, the administration has further hardened its stand,” a representative of the University of Hyderabad Teachers’ Association (UHTA) said. The UHTA said that a committee had been “unilaterally constituted by the vice-chancellor to look into the matter, with deeply prejudicial terms of reference. Those terms of reference are such that they literally amount to putting the victim on trial all over again”.
The UHTA has the following demands: A public apology to Dr Temsen, issue of show-cause to deputy registrar estate and security and reconstitution of the committee and its terms of reference. The association wanted a woman faculty member as chairperson, an external member, a member from the Northeast and representatives of the UHTA in the committee. UoH security officials had raided the residence of Dr Temsen following a complaint from a neighbour and photographed some persons inside.
Suspension of 5 Dalits condemned:
Members of Ambedkar Students’ Association condemned the one-semester suspension of five Dalit students at the University of Hyderabad for a case of alleged assault over a Facebook post recently.
“University of Hyderabad administration has yet again employed its standard technique of suppressing student voices,” an association representative said.
The association said local ABVP president Susheel Kumar, who had posted the material on Facebook that led to the controversy, has just got a warning letter. The association rejected the decision of the proctorial board and called for intensifying the protests.
