Tomin Thachankary graph goes up as he leaves Consumerfed

He had proved his managerial skill earlier too during his stint
Thiruvananthapuram: Even as Mr Tomin J. Thachankary stepped down from Consumerfed with moist eyes, he could heave a sigh of relief that his clean-up drive there has at least helped improve his tainted image.
Despite his shady track record comprising corruption and torture allegations and dubious foreign trips, the employees of Consumerfed, cutting across party lines, rallied behind Mr Thachankary for having exposed the massive corruption in the organisation, most of which pertained to extravaganza by top bosses, including chairman Joy Thomas, a Congress ‘I’ loyalist.
The 1987-batch IPS officer had faced a barrage of allegations over these years and former state police chief K.S. Balasubramanian had even recommended his termination from service invoking the provision of All-India Services Rules.
A custodial torture case against Mr Thachankary was based on a complaint raised by Punnapra native N. Prakashan that he was tortured in a murder case. The petitioner later backtracked and subsequently Mr Thachankarywas acquitted. The Vigilance filed a chargesheet against him in 2013 for amassing illegal wealth of Rs.79 lakh. A dubious Qatar visit in 2010 even came under the scanner of National
Investigation Agency after he met some persons with criminal backgrounds. A police anti-piracy team led by IPS officer Rishi Raj Singh raided Riyan Studio run by Mr Thachankary's wife in 2006.
Mr Thachankary, who was said to be close to the CPM leadership, also faced allegations of smuggling electronic gadgets for the party channel. “Not only me, but many senior officers also faced cases and serious allegations. Those are part of our job,” Mr Thachankary commented.
He had brought to light irregularities to the tune of Rs. 100 crore and sent 22 reports to the government seeking action. “It was with the support of the employees that I could expose these. I could bring in financial discipline in the organisation and it has started reflecting on the account books in terms of increasing revenues,” said Mr Thachankary, an ADGP rank officer.
He had proved his managerial skill earlier too during his stint with Kerala Books and Publications Society for two years from 2005.
The society recorded brisk business during that period and even worked round-the-clock in shifts. As he steps in for a second innings, Mr Thachankary hopes to repeat the success again, that too at a time when the KBPS has also faced the people’s wrath for delaying textbook printing.
