Thanjavur district temples too get a facelift

The flight of 60 steps leading to the sanctum sanctorum represent the 60 Tamil months

KUMBAKONAM: The ‘Mahakum babishekam (consecration) of Sri Swaminatha Swamy temple at Swamimalai near Kumbakonam was held on Wednesday. Hundreds of people witnessed the holy event.

After the sixth phase of ‘yagasala poojas’, which started on Sunday, were completed, ‘Gadams’ were taken in procession and holy water was poured over the “kalasams of Raja Gopuram, Moolavar vimanam, Ambal vimanam and Vimanas of parihaara devatas” at 6.30 am today.

The temple was renovated at a cost of Rs 2 crores and renovation work had been going on for three years.

Swamimalai is the fourth among the ‘Arupadai veedus’ of Lord Muruga and the presiding deity Swaminatha Swamy was so christened because Lord Muruga taught the ‘Om pranava mantra’ to his father Lord Siva at this place. Swamimalai is a manmade hillock.

Ramaswamy temple Mahasamprokshanam
Besides the above temple, the Mahasamprokshanam of Sri Ramaswamy temple at Kumbakonam was also held on Wednesday.

The temple was renovated at a cost of Rs 1 crore. The temple dedicated to Lord Rama is 600-years-old and built by Regunatha Nayak.

In the ‘Pattabhisheakam’ posture, Lord Rama is seen with Sita, Lakshmana with the bow of Rama, Bharatha with umbrella (Venkotrakudai), Shatrugna with ‘samaram’ and Lord Anjaneya with a veena and a copy of the Ramayana in hand. The consecration was performed at 6.30 am.

Gowtameswaraswamy Temple
Further, the ‘Mahakumbabishekam (consecration)’ of Sri Soundaranayaki samedha Gowtameswaraswamy temple near the Mahamaham tank was held at Kumbakonam on Wednesday.

The ‘Yagasala poojas’ had started on September seven and their sixth phase were held on Wednesday morning. ‘Gadams’ were taken in procession and holy water was poured over the kalasams at 6.30 am.

The name Gowtameswaraswamy was given to the Lord as sage Gowtama worshiped him at this shrine.
