Floatigation plan for Siddhartha pond

Method to spruce up the water body; nix spread of foul smell
Hyderabad: With floatigation and special lighting, the map of Telangana and Kakatiya Kalatorana is being created at the Lake View Park opposite Imax and Siddhartha Pond.
An official of the Buddha Purnima Project wing of the HMDA said that phosphates and nitrates in water bodies cause algal boom, which results in a decrease in oxygen content in water and also releases foul smell due to decomposition.
Floatigation is an initiative being taken up at Siddhartha Pond and Lake View park ponds at Hussainsagar to reduce this. Floatigation involves the use of cubical floats to form different shapes – like Telangana map, Kakatiya Kalatoranam – covering roughly one to two acres.
Plants are grown on the floats; these do not need water, fertilisers or de-weeding. These floats also play host to birds. By cocering the water, the floats reduce loss due to evaporation.
“Underneath the floating islands the fish density increases tremendously. Overall the aesthetics of the place improves with greenery. Low height plants such as arrow head plant, canna, sedge plant, semi-aquatic Irises, robust paddy, water lilies (submerged crates with support of floats), water lettuce etc. are preferred,” added officials.
