Yettinahole: Political biggies back out
Politicians of Dakshina Kannada District are unable to lead or actively participate in the protest
Mangaluru: Despite severe opposition to the controversial Yettinahole river diversion project, politicians of Dakshina Kannada District are unable to lead or actively participate in the protest against the project.
Leaders of Congress, BJP and the Left parties are silent on this issue with activists alleging that local politicians are silent as their top leaders support the project. “CM Siddaramaiah and former minister M Veerappa Moily have taken great interest in this project. Congress MLAs and Ministers of DK district do not want to oppose this project as any opposition could cost them their posts in future. The second rung leaders who are enjoying power in boards and corporations too do not want to make the state government unhappy,” Karavali Jeevanadhi Netravathi Rakshana Samithi vice president M.G. Hegde told DC.
“Similar is the case with BJP. The project was cleared by D.V. Sadananda Gowda during his tenure as Chief Minister. BJP leaders here do not want to annoy the party, so they too are silent on the issue. As senior Left leaders are supporting Netravati diversion, they too are silent,” he alleged.
“Some leaders like MLA J.R. Lobo, MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Congress leader Janardhan Poojary have given statements against the project. But their opposition is restricted to statements,” he added. Sahyadri Sanchaya convener Dinesh Holla spoke.
