Trade centre all decked up for GIM summit
The government is expecting more than Rs 1 lakh crore investments from the event
Chennai: With only one day to go for Tamil Nadu’s first Global Investors Meet to take off, delegates and investors are heading to Chennai, hoping to cash in on the government’s intent of making the state an attractive investment destination.
The government is expecting more than Rs 1 lakh crore investments from the event, scheduled for September 9 and 10. Thirty companies from the United Kingdom, which is one of the partnering countries for the investors meet, will showcase their products, services and technologies at the UK Pavilion on September 9 and 10. Major British companies like British Airways, Intertek Group, Jaguar Land Rover and Wrightbus will participate.
According to Bharat Joshi, British Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai, during the GIM they will announce new partnerships and investments in Tamil Nadu along with the business success that the UK companies are experiencing in the state. “We will have on display- the Optare Versa electric bus, recently-launched Discovery Sport by Land Rover and cruiser bikes - Rocket III, Thunderbird LT and Tiger XRx by Triumph,” he said.
The US-India Business Council (USIBC), an official partner organisation, is also leading an executive delegation to the investors meet. The delegation includes representatives from US-based companies Amway, NCR Corporation, Uber, PayPal, SunEdison, Ford, IBM and General Electric.
Diane Farrell, executive vice president of USIBC, who will lead the delegation said with over 250 US companies across several industry sectors already investing in TN, the meet will provide an opportunity to highlight the business-friendly approach undertaken by the state. “This meet will serve as an excellent opportunity for USIBC member companies interested in a wide range of sectors including aerospace, agriculture, infrastructure, information technology, and renewable energy,” he added.
The Australian delegation will be led by the Australian High Commissioner to India, Patrick Suckling. According to Sean Kelly, Australian Consul-General to South India, the country is looking forward to partnership between Australia and Tamil Nadu in key sectors like dairy, fisheries and auto. Senior representatives from the Australian dairy and sustainable fishing industries will also present their capabilities at the seminar.
More than 30 non-partner countries are also sending delegates for the mega-event. The state government has roped in Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Russia, the UK and Singapore as partners for the summit. During the summit, partner countries will each have one hour to highlight their industrial prowess.
