Suicide sparks protest in Srikakulam district

Sirisha’s parents had given Rs 5 lakh cash and 100 gms gold jewellery as dowry

Srikakulam: A 20-year-old housewife committed suicide allegedly unable to bear the torture from in-laws and husband for additional dowry at Murapaka village in Laveru mandal in Srikakulam district late on Sunday night.

On Monday morning, the family members of the victim staged a protest before the SP’s office and demanded action against the accused. The deceased, B. Sirisha, was a native of Vangara mandal. According to sources, Sirisha was married to B. Murali Ambedkar on May 1, 2015.

Sirisha’s parents had given Rs 5 lakh cash and 100 gms gold jewellery as dowry during her marriage. Ambedkar works in Visakhapatnam Naval dockyard. Since the beginning, Sirisha was reportedly tortured by her in-laws and husband for additional dowry. Unable to bear it, she came to her parents who convinced her and sent her back to her husband's home.

Sirisha also had to face harassment from her husband’s sisters. On Sunday night, when her family members were out of the house on some purpose, Sirisha committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan. On knowing about the death, her family members reached Murapaka and her father, Jayaram blamed his son-in-law and his family behind the death.

Sirisha’s family members staged a dharna before the SP office charging police with trying to dilute the case only to save Ambedkar. They obstructed SP A.S. Khan’s vehicle who convinced them and promised to take strict action against Ambedkar and his family members, if they were found guilty after investigation.
