Mata Amritanandamayi pledges Rs 100 crore for toilet project
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Mata Amritanandamayi has extended financial aid to construct toilets in the poor villages surrounding the Ganges as part of the Prime Minister’s ‘Namami Gange’ project.
She will present a draft for Rs 100 crore to Mr Arun Jaitley, Union Finance Minister, at a function at Amritapuri Ashram in Kollam on September 11.
Mata Amritanandamayi, at a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on March 28, had expressed her wish to join the Clean Ganga project.
Mr Modi appreciated the gesture and praised the Math’s environmental initiatives, which were in line with his own Swachh Bharat campaign.
The Math had launched its Amala Bharatam Campaign (ABC) in 2010—a programme aimed at improving public health and restoring India’s natural beauty.
Through ABC, lakhs of volunteers clean public places and spread awareness in schools on proper disposal of trash and against spitting or urinating in public.
The volunteers also clean up the Sabarimala pilgrimage site and Pampa river.
