Kerala to bear cost of toddler’s surgery
Kochi: The boy who was mauled by a stray dog while playing at home in Kothamangalam successfully underwent a surgery around his eyes on Monday. But doctors are still unsure of the two-and-half-year-old fully regaining eyesight.
“He suffered a deep wound on lacrimal canals – the small channels in the eyelid - besides injuries on the nose, cheek and lips,” hospital sources said.
Though the surgery that lasted for nearly three-and-half hours was successful, they said it would take two days to determine whether he would fully regain his vision.
Devnandan, son of Thrikkariyoor native Raveendran, was attacked by the stray dog while his mother went inside the house to bring him food.
He was bitten on both his eyes, head and in the back of his neck. He would now be administered with Rabies Immunoglobulin for the next one month at regular intervals.
“The surgery was carried out today (Monday) following the expert opinion that it could not be performed soon after giving the anti-rabies vaccine,” doctors at the Little Flower Hospital, Angamaly, said.
Meanwhile, the state government would bear all the treatment expenses of the boy.
“The chief minister has given the necessary directions to the district collector and the hospital authorities. In the wake of the incident, we’ve also started vaccination drive for stray dogs,” district panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappilly said.
Veteran actor Mammootty too extended all financial assistance for the treatment of the boy.
