Jayalalithaa inaugurates medical college at Chepauk

The state will spend Rs 476 crore towards upgrading the medical infrastructure
Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa on Monday inaugurated a Rs 200 crore medical college and hostel at the Government Omandurar estate at Chepauk here through video conferencing at the secretariat.
She also laid the foundation for new hospital buildings estimated to come up at a cost of Rs 307 crore and ordered purchase of high-end medical equipment at a cost of Rs
12 crore. The state will spend Rs 476 crore towards upgrading the medical infrastructure.
A press release said the Medical Council of India in principle had allotted 100 MBBS seats for the 20th medical college in the state. The state had sanctioned as many as 410 appointments to ensure operations of the new super specialty hospital and the medical college.
In the past four years the number of medical seats had gone up by 710 making the total MBBS seats reaching an all time high of 2,655.
The government had allocated
Rs 12.24 crore towards procuring medical equipment for the college, the release said.
“The city has three government medical colleges and this one being located in Chennai will also receive good patronage from meritorious students. Chennai being a medical capital of India, deserves a few more government medical colleges”, said Ganga Mallan, consultant, Chest medicine and Indian Medical Association consultant for National TB programme. Chief secretary K. Gnanadesikan, finance minister O. Panneerselvam, health minister Vijayabhaskar and health secretary J. Radhakrishnan were among those present.
