Focus on thermal power: CM K Chandrasekhar Rao

Mr Prabhakara Rao added that only 25 MU from hydel power units had been generated this year against 1,130 MU last year

Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who held a review meeting on Monday morning before leaving for China, instructed TSGenco officials to concentrate on generating thermal power and purchases from outside instead of depending on hydel power.

He told officials that the state could not depend on hydel power either from Srisailam or Nagarjunasagar this year owing to lack of inflows and asked them to meet the power demand by generating more from thermal stations and buy power from the open market.

TSGenco chairman cum managing director D. Prabhakara Rao informed the Chief Minister that they had already met the season’s highest demand of 153 million units a few days ago and had been meeting the state’s power requirement without going for load shedding.

He said that a maximum of 7,000 MW would be met from all the existing sources including purchases from open market. Mr Prabhakara Rao added that only 25 MU from hydel power units had been generated this year against 1,130 MU last year.

Anticipating the precarious situation in Krishna Basin, TSGenco had taken steps to meet the power demand.
