After beef-ban, meat-ban in Mumbai on account of Jain festival

There was a similar directive last year as well

Mumbai: Motivated by the Mira-Bhayander Municipal corporation’s decision to ban the sale of meat for a period of 8 days during the Jain festival of Prayushan, the BMC has followed suit, banning the sale of meat in civic markets for four days.

The order issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has banned sale of meat for four days during September 10, 13, 17 and 18, when the slaughterhouses will be shut and there would be no sale of meat in the city. There was a similar directive last year as well.

The celebrations attached to Ganpati festival is also set to start on September 17.

The ban follows a request made by the Ahimsa Sangh, Vishwamaitri Trust. The request claims that the festival would attract a sizeable number of Jain monks to the city which in itself has a good Jain population, and since ahimsa is one of the basic tenets of the religion, they be considerate and cooperate during the rituals.
