Assam MLA faces case for raping minor maid
Guwahati: The Assam police on Monday registered an FIR against MLA Gopinath Das on charges of raping his minor maid-servant in his private vehicle.
The victim family in its FIR accused that Mr Das an All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA from Boko, raped the minor girl in a moving car on Saturday. She managed to escape from the official residence of the MLA in Dispur on Sunday and reached home. The police, after registering the FIR, has sent the girl to Guwahati Medical College Hospital for medical examination.
However, the MLA has also submitted a counter FIR with Dispur police station accusing the girl of fleeing from his residence and stealing some valuables.
Refuting the charges against him, Mr Das said that it was a political conspiracy of his opponents to defame him. “Since the elections are round the corner, it was aimed at to tarnish my image,” Mr Das said, adding, “The allegations are very saddening. The reports are false and I totally condemn it. An attempt is being made to tarnish my image, disrupt my political career ahead of state election.”
Mr Das, however, admitted that the girl was working for him from June 28 till September 5, 2015. “If something like that may have been my intention, it would have happened in my house and not elsewhere, said the legislator while accusing, “Why did she run away with our money and jewellery?” Some members of the civil society groups staged a sit-in strike.
