Vitamin C supplements could be as effective as exercise: study
Recent studies claim that daily vitamin C supplements could be as effective as walking in improving the health of obese people. Those overweight people, who fail to regularly exercise, can now take daily vitamin C tablets – the equivalent to one Berocca tablet – for maintaining cardiovascular health.
Researchers at the University of Colorado studied whether vitamin C supplements could lower ET-1 activity - endothelin (ET)-1 is a small vessel-constricting protein. They analysed around 35 sedentary, overweight or obese adults for a period of three months.
While twenty of the study participants took daily supplements, fifteen had aerobic exercise training daily. The researchers found that daily intake of vitamin C – 500mg a day – decreased ET-1 related vessel constriction as much as walking did.
The study findings will be presented at the 14th International Conference on Endothelin: Physiology, Pathophysiology and Therapeutics, according to the Daily Mail.
