Here's wishing Asha Bhosle a melodious birthday through her evergreen songs
Asha Bhosle has been one of the iconic singers of the Indian music fraternity since time immemorial. On the occasion of the singer’s 82 birthday we share with you the effervescent melodies sung by her through her years in the industry where a voice may seem lost if not loved by the masses.
Asha was born in the small hamlet of Goar in Sangli in Maharashtra, into the musical family of Master Deenanath Mangeshkar. Her father was a theatre actor and classical singer. The family later moved from Pune to Kolhapur and then to Mumbai.
She and her elder sister Lata Mangeshkar began singing and acting in films to support their family. She sang her first film song ‘Chala Chala Nav Bala’ for the Marathi film Majha Bal (1943).
She made her Hindi film debut when she sang the song "Saawan Aaya" for Hansraj Behl's ‘Chunariya’, ‘Raat Ki Raani’ (1949). There has been no looking back for Asha ever since.
