Welcome ceremony for Dasara elephants put off
The elephants were supposed to be taken to the palace on Sunday which was later scheduled for Monday
Mysuru: After deciding to keep Dasara simple and dropping the Gajapayana celebrations at Nagapura near Nagarhole Tiger Reserve, the Mysuru district administration has now postponed the traditional welcome of Dasara elephants at the courtyard of Mysuru Palace, scheduled for Monday.
It has been postponed to September 9. Usually, the jumbos, after arriving in the city, were allowed to rest for a day at Aranya Bhavan of the forest department and later taken to the palace courtyard where all necessary arrangements would be made for the acclimatisation exercise for the Dasara Jumbo Savari procession. The elephants were supposed to be taken to the palace on Sunday which was later scheduled for Monday. Now it has been postponed till Wednesday.
Poor facilities
“The facilities at Aranya Bhavan are just not enough. They need to be taken for a walk, we are making them roam around in the campus. We can manage the elephants with difficulty till Wednesday, but if they postpone the date again, it will be tough,” forest department sources told Deccan Chronicle.
In the first batch, six elephants including 55-year-old Arjuna from Balle camp of Nagarahole, 57-year-old Balarama from Thithimathi camp of Nagarhole, 49-year-old Abhimanyu from Thithimathi camp of Nagarhole, female elephant Chaithra from Bandipur, Cauvery and Vikram from Dubaare Elephant camp in Khushalnagar have arrived at Aranya Bhavan on September 4. They were received after performing traditional pooja by the forest department officials.
