State Election Commission may go with govt dates at meeting

The commission may go with the state government proposal to hold elections on November 24 and 26

Thiruvananthapuram: The all-party meeting on Monday convened by the State Election Commission to discuss the conduct of the local body poll is not likely to arrive at a consensus.

All political eyes are on the meeting scheduled to be held at 11 am at the Government Guest House, Thycaud, here.

The commission may go with the state government proposal to hold elections on November 24 and 26.

The meeting assumes significance in the wake of the High Court ruling that the State Election Commission can decide on how and when to conduct the local body poll.

In an affidavit submitted in the High Court, the state government had opined that the State Election Commission could begin the election process in October to complete it within 46 days.

As per the affidavit, elections can be completed by November 30 to ensure that the new committees could assume office by December 1.

However, as per Article 243(E) of the Constitution, the newly elected administrative councils in local bodies should assume office before the term of incumbent administrative councils expires.

As per this provision, newly elected representatives have to assume office before November 1 when the term of the current local bodies expires.
