Mohanlal to be ambassador for Organ Donation
KOCHI: Union minister for science and technology Dr Harsh Vardhan will formally dedicate the centre of excellence in organ transplantation at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences on September 8.
During the function, to be attended by health minister V.S. Sivakumar, Mohanlal will honour families of persons who have donated their organs and became role models for others.
The superstar will also formally endorse the initiative as its goodwill ambassador. During the last 15 years, AIMS has carried out about 900 organ transplants including the heart, small intestine, pancreas and bone marrow besides liver and kidney.
Hospital authorities claimed that it was the only facility in South East Asia which is equipped to do hand transplant backed by a team of specialist doctors, paramedics and support services.
The hospital had already done two hand transplants — the first on a 30-year-old man from Kerala and the second on an ex-army captain from Afghanistan.
During the function, the family of the donors of the hands will also be felicitated for their exemplary deed.
