Contraband will land courier company bosses in trouble
Thiruvananthapuram: Following an intelligence alert on smugglers using courier services to transfer drugs and other contraband, the State Police Chief (SPC) has directed courier companies to install scanners to monitor parcels.
SPC TP Senkumar has also warned that the Managing Directors, Chairmen and Directors of courier companies could be booked under relevant sections if contraband is recovered from the parcels delivered.
Both the intelligence wing and Narcotics Control Bureau had sounded the alarm as smugglers use fake address of sender and recipient to transfer cocaine and other high value contraband.
“The smugglers who keep track of the courier online, collect the packages from courier offices before it reaches the non-existent address,” police sources said.
Though the directive does not mention postal services, sources added that there was information of contraband exchange happening through the post as well.
The new directive by TP Senkumar to the District Police chief says that drug smuggling through courier service has become a threat to society.
“Cases can be registered under section 149 of CrPC. Once contraband is found during scanning, courier officials should inform police,” the directive said.
