Calicut University hostel allotment row boils over again
KOZHIKODE: After a break, the hostel issue is simmering again at Calicut University campus as the hostel development committee hazs decided to allot rooms for the self-financing students in the men’s hostel.
The regular students in the hostel protested the move and warned that another round of protests would be staged if the authorities were going to implement the decision.
They alleged that the move was against the decisions taken in the reconciliatory meeting convened by the Chief Minster on October 28, last year and submitted a memorandum to the VC to take immediate action on the issue.
What worries many, at a time when the University is gearing up for the Naac visit, that these issues and students’ complaints about the living conditions would affect the Naac grading.
In the memorandum submitted to VC Dr M.K. Abdul Khader, the students said that the decision taken by the hostel committee, which has no statutory powers, is against the decisions taken in the CM’s meeting and also violates the affidavits submitted before the State human rights commission and higher education council.
“The decisions taken by the syndicate subcommittee and faculty committee are also being sabotaged by this illegal move from the hostel development committee,” said hostel secretary P. Vivek.
The students requested the VC to arrange facilities for the self-financing students to stay in the guest house as per the decision taken earlier and to avoid further protests in the campus.
The issue of allocating rooms to regular and self-financing students in the men’s hostel led to a series of violent clashes and a 146-day long indefinite fast by the SFI which ended in March this year.
