Women beaten up mercilessly, cops suspended

Police officials surrounded the two women and hit them with lathis mercilessly
Belagavi: Two innocent women were brutally beaten up in public at Ganpat Galli by a team of police officials on Saturday, accusing the them of indulging in thefts. During their evening patrolling in the city, the police team caught two women alleging that they were conspiring to carry out a theft and started beating them.
The police officials surrounded the two women and hit them with lathis mercilessly even as the two were screaming for help. After the police brutality was telecast on news channels, the police department suspended a police inspector and three constables, besides initiating a departmental inquiry against an assistant sub-inspector and two women constables.
Belagavi Police Commissioner S. Ravi said that the police constables and officials forcibly tried to put the two women into their van when they found that the two women were allegedly hatching plans to carry out a theft. When the women refused to get into the van, the constables started beating them up. The three constables, I.S. Patil, M.G. Kurer and V.D. Babanagar were suspended by the SP.
Khadebazaar Inspector U.H. Satenahalli, who reached the spot when the women were being attacked, also started hitting the women with his lathi. Mr Ravi said that Mr Satehanahalli too has been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been ordered against Assistant Sub-Inspector M.S .Khangaokar, women constables Bharati Chikkodi and Sumangala Dombar, who were present during the attack.
Members of several women's organisations, including Spandana, CFAR and Belagavi Integrated Rural Development Society, met the commissioner demanding action against all the police officials involved in the incident. They said that mere suspension of officials was not enough and that the errant officials should face stringent action.
