TMC men held for toll plaza stir
TIRUCHY: Police on Sunday arrested several volunteers of the Tamil Manila Congress (TMC) for hindering free movement of vehicles at the NHAI’s toll plaza in suburban Thuvakudi two days ago.
It might be recalled that TMC men had laid siege to all the NHAI’s toll plazas across the state, protesting against the abnormal hike in toll fees and to urge the Central and State governments to withdraw the collection of toll fees as in the case of Gujarat and Odisha.
The TMC men arrested today included Thoppi Chelladurai, Kattur Rajendran, Mahendran, Kumar and Papakurichi Rajendran. All of them were produced before Ms. Saranya, Judicial magistrate-VI, who remanded them to judicial custody.
M.D. Raja Raja Cholan, state secretary of the TMC strongly condemned the police for filing false cases against the TMC volunteers.
In a release here on Sunday night, Mr Cholan said that Friday’s agitation was peaceful and there was no violence or any other wrongful activities.
He said that since police had picked up all the agitators, there was no question of hindrance to the free movement of vehicles passing through the toll plaza.
Mr. Cholan alleged that this was “a pure act of political vendetta” against TMC men by the ruling AIADMK Government, adding, the TMC men would prove their innocence in the court of law.
