It is an honour to act as Rajini sir’s fan: Natraj

He seems to be shuttling between going behind and in front of the camera
One of the top Bollywood cinematographers-turned-hero Natty aka Natraj Subramaniam of late seems to be shuttling between going behind and in front of the camera. After completing the mammoth fantasy entertainer Puli with the likes of Vijay, Sridevi, Shruti Haasan and Hansika, Natty who moved on to his acting venture Enkitte Modhadhe has finished the project without any fanfare.
Talk about Enkitte... he gets excited. “I play an ardent fan of Superstar Rajinikanth sir in a story set in the 80s. In real life too, I am an ardent fan of Rajini sir and I have grown up watching his films. I consider it an honour to act in the role of a Rajini fan. And many say that my speedy dialogue delivery and body language resembles Rajini sir’s. That is not intentional. I take it as a compliment,” he smiles.
Directed by Ramu Chellappa, the film has Rajaji of Moodar Koodam fame playing a Kamal Haasan fan. Both essay painters who paint cut-outs. “No one has touched this cut-out culture genre. What starts off a small issue with respect to erecting cut-outs later boils over as a political issue,” he says, in which Sanchitha Shetty is romancing Natty.
Speaking about Puli, he says the movie gave him a different experience. “It’s a period setup fantasy film. I tried to bring that mood through my camera, which was challenging. Of course, I could achieve this with Muthuraj’s artwork and the freedom director Chimbu Devan gave me,” he tells us.
Heaping praise on Vijay, Natty says, he was amazed with Vijay’s dedication and the way he handled stunt sequences. “His personal contribution towards the scenes and commitment in the movie is enormous. He is very particular that he does his dance or stunt movements only once and never repeats it. There was a particular larger-than-life risky stunt sequence, which can be done only with a trained martial arts person and that too with rehearsal. We thought we would use ropes and do it. But Vijay sir said ‘no’. And even without rehearsals, much to our astonishment he got the shot correct in just one take,” he smiles. About Bollywood diva Sridevi he says,
“I felt it was a dream coming true to work with Sridevi ma’am. Watching her perform behind the camera is amazing. She is extremely beautiful and always a cameraman’s delight,” he signs off.
