Ministers say ready for talks on OROP

Government announced acceptance of long-pending demand for One Rank, One Pension

Pune/ New Delhi: As the ex-servicemen refused to end their stir despite an announcement on OROP, Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said if there is any shortcoming in the scheme, the government may look into it. “If there is any shortcoming, we may look into it,” he said addressing an interactive session with various professionals here.

Mr Singh’s remarks came when an ex-serviceman brought to his notice that the issues of those former soldiers who took VRS were not addressed by the One Rank, One Pension policy announced by the government on Saturday.

The government on Saturday announced acceptance of the long-pending demand for One Rank, One Pension but the ex-servicemen, who have been on agitation, rejected the key details of the decision and said their stir will continue.

The government, however, asked the veterans to end their 84-day agitation as their basic demand has been accepted. Addressing a press conference, parliamentary affairs minister M. Venkaiah Naidu asserted that the Centre was open to talks after the veterans voiced their dissatisfaction over key provisions.

He also hit back at the Congress, saying it had “no moral right” to criticise after failing to deliver on OROP issue during its rule. “The basic demand of OROP of the ex-servicemen has been accepted.

These are ancillary issues, which can be discussed. Government is positive. I urge the ex-servicemen that they should stop their agitation since their basic demand of OROP has been accepted,” the minister said.
