Lankan Tamil suffered fracture, contusions: Sources
Sources said that Lankan national Mohan, 46,had fractured his wrist in police custody and had contusions on his body
Chennai: The initial post-mortem report on the body of the Sri Lankan Tamil who died while in police custody at Pallikaranai station on Thursday night indicates there was fracture and contusions on victim’s body.
Sources said that Lankan national Mohan, 46, had fractured his wrist in police custody and had contusions on his body before he was taken from Pallikaranai police station to a private hospital where he died early Friday morning.
He was picked up from his Medavakkam residence early Thursday morning by sleuths from the anti-gangster team of the Chennai police in connection with his suspected links with a fake passport / visa racket.
“We thought he may be an important link but we could seize only five fake visas and a few fake passports from him. So we handed him over to Pallikaranai police station. He was healthy when we handed over him the station,” a source in anti-gangster team told this newspaper. “It looks like action by policemen at Pallikaranai station led to fracture on his wrist and blood clotting in his body,” another police officer said.
Judicial magistrate begins probe into death of Mohan
Alandur judicial magistrate P. Vidya on Saturday initiated probe into the death of Sri Lankan Tamil, K. Mohan (45), who died on Friday, allegedly after custodial torture. Police said he died of health complications.
The magistrate visited the Government Royapettah Hospital mortuary amidst road roko and protests by cadres of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Kathci (VCK) outside the mortuary. “She checked for visible injuries on the body and also took statements from all family members here. His parents live in Canada while two of his sisters live in Sri Lanka,” said M. Jayavel, Mohan’s counsel.
“It was a clear case of torture under custody which led to Mohan’s death. There were visible injuries and blood clots in his body.” Jayavel added. Mohan’s sister-in-law, R. Sumitra told the media he had no criminal history or any health complications as suggested by the cops. “That, he died of cardiac arrest as suggested by cops is unbelievable,” Sumitra said.
She is married to the victim’s younger brother, Ramesh, Mohan’s only blood relative in the country. Ramesh was convicted in a Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) case and is at Puzhal prison.
Mohan, a resident of Ram gardens, Sowmya Nagar, Medavakkam was picked up by the Central Crime Branch cops on Thursday in connection with a fake passport racket and detained at the Pallikaranai police station.
