CPI, JDS urge State Election Commission to hold elections in time
Thiruvananthapuram: CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran has urged the SEC to comply with the constitutional obligation to put in place governing councils of local bodies by November 1.
He said that the all-party meeting on Monday was only a ploy to postpone the elections. The authorities should realise there is a Supreme Court verdict stipulating polls on schedule.
“We will request the SEC to discharge his constitutional responsibility of holding elections on time. The spirit of the High Court directive is also the same” he said. The LDF was also of the same opinion.
Janata Dal (Secular) state president Mathew T. Thomas, MLA, said there was no question of a consensus emerging at the all-party meeting.
“How can there be unanimity on the issue. The ruling front wants to extend the polls, we are demanding governing councils in office by November 1,” he said.
We cannot allow the bureaucrats and nominated people run the show. It is against Constitution. There is no question of compromising on the issue,” he added.
