50 civil servants start an initiative
They mentor students aspiring to join civil services despite their busy schedule
Chennai: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, around 50 civil servants in various parts of the country have come together and partnering to mentor students who want to join the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) or any other civil service.
Making best use of technology and revolution in virtual medium, these officers, who christened themselves as civil services guides, are offering free online mentorship programme through 'Telegram Messenger App".
Poor students who can't afford expensive coaching and also students who need additional guidance are now queuing-up to join the programme. Under the initiative, students are provided opportunity to interact and get guidance directly from serving civil servants on a daily basis. The officers are pulling out 2-3 hours from their busy schedule to shape the future.
Chief mentor P. Manivannan, a native of Tamil Nadu and managing director of Karnataka Water Supply and Drainage Board, said it was not a 'regular' coaching like it happened elsewhere.
"This is to guide you, motivate you and stand by your side during your arduous journey. There are around 50 serving civil servants from different services including the IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, IFoS, IDAS and IIS who will guide aspirants in the virtual space, daily. Classes are conducted daily for 2-3 hours starting 9 pm". He said students can either opt for self-study classroom or join Red-Amber-Green (RAG) group. The RAG is where civil servants go a step further and guide students on strategy..
A senior IAS officer said there were about 500-odd registered candidates from across the country. Two students from Japan and Germany are also taking guidance.
