Why have teaching standards fallen, Bengaluru student asks Modi
The boy’s kidney problem caused him to miss more than five months of school
Bengaluru: Athmik Ajoy, a class X student of Little Flower Public School, Banashankari, in the city, underwent a kidney transplant when he was a kid. It was his father who donated one of his kidneys to save his son. The boy’s kidney problem caused him to miss more than five months of school. But on Friday he was the cynosure of all eyes during the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s interaction with students. His question drew the attention of the whole country – he asked about the decreasing quality these days, of teaching in schools.
Young Ajoy wanted to know why the youth was not willing to take up teaching as a profession, and how teaching can be made more attractive to youth. He concluded his question by asking the Prime Minister when we can expect another Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan. But even before young Ajoy completed his question, Prime Minister asked him what he wanted to become when he grew up. Master Ajoy was taken aback for a few seconds. He said he was yet to decide, but he wanted to pursue higher education in Computer Science.
Prime Minister said this was the main problem. "We can serve the nation not only by joining the armed forces or being in politics. There were several ways, he said, to contribute to nation building. Teaching is one of the great professions,” he said. Modi added, “I don’t think India lacks good teachers." Ajoy has won several national and international awards for his projects related to environmental protection and lake conservation.
Two schools from the city participated in the event. Among them were Team Pentagon members of New Horizon Public School, Indiranagar. This team, which had recently won the Technovation World Pitch Challenge at San Francisco for the App Sellixo which can be used for garbage disposal, had last month met the Prime Minister. All the five members of the team - Swasthi P Rao, Sanjana Vasanth, Anupama N, Mahima Mehendale and Navyashree B were present during the interaction.
Team leader Anupama N. introduced her team to the prime minister. Modi immediately recalled his recent meeting with the team members. “Did you come to meet me in parliament?” he asked. He heaped praise on their App, saying with students like them, “Bharat Swatch hoke rahega”. A question asked by the team Pentagon to the PM was, what were the challenges faced by the Swachh Bharat initiative? Modi replied by saying if school students were achieving so much, making Apps on Swachh Bharat and winning laurels, then he was sure India could be ‘Swachh’. The Prime Minister informed the students that making our country clean was the biggest challenge. “I appreciate your contribution,” he said.
