Temple demolition causes stir at Kothapet

The idol was lifted from the debris and shifted in a municipal garbage lifting van

Hyderabad: The demolition of a Ganesh temple at Lakshminagar Colony, Kothapet, led to protests against the GHMC and police officials.

Kothapet resident B. Yashpal Goud said that at about 1.30 am, GHMC officials including the zonal commissioner and the deputy commissioner of LB Nagar and police officers oversaw the demolition of the Sri Lakshmi Ganapathi Devalayam situated on a piece of private land since 1986. No notice was given, he said.

The idol was lifted from the debris and shifted in a municipal garbage lifting van, he claimed and added that the Chaitanyapuri police did not take their complaint.

A GHMC officer said: “We received a complaint from local residents about the temple, which has been built on government road. Based on their complaint, the temple was razed.”

The SHRC has directed the GHMC commissioner and Cyberabad police commissioner to file a report on the incident by October 26.
