Onion prices still high in markets
The subsidised onions being supplied by the govt are lasting for just about three hours
Hyderabad: Onion prices continue to remain at the higher levels in retail market. The TS government’s efforts to bring down prices by supplying onions at subsidised rates at Rs 20 per kg through Rythu Bazaars and special counters have not had much impact on the prices due to the severe shortage of stocks.
While top quality onions are being sold for Rs 70 per kg in the retail market, the medium-range onions are priced at Rs 60 and third-grade onions are priced at Rs 50 per kg. The marketing department estimates that onion prices will come down in October with the expected arrival of fresh onion crop.
The subsidised onions being supplied by the government are lasting for just about three hours in the rythu bazaars due to the heavy demand from consumers, who stand in long queues for hours.
The staff at sales counters are collecting the details of ration card and Aadhaar cards to ensure that there are no repeat buyers as the government has limited the supply of subsidised onions to 2 kg per household.
