In-camera trial of PILs against grant
The state has the power to sanction money to the public servant
Hyderabad: While considering the request from Telangana advocate general, K. Ramakrishna Reddy, the Hyderabad High Court on Friday decided to conduct in-camera proceedings on two PILs challenging the granting of Rs 15 lakh to IAS officer Smitha Sabarwal as legal expenses for fighting a defamation case.
When the petition by K. Eshwar Rao, a city resident, came up for hearing, senior counsel appearing for the petitioner told the court that it was a private affair between the officer and the magazine and spending public money on such matters is unwarranted.
The A-G contended that the state has the power to sanction money to the public servant as per Article 162 of the Constitution. The bench pointed out to the petitioner’s counsel how the petitioner can term it as a private affair. The case was adjourned to Monday.
