Bengaluru: Fearing amputation, head constable ends life
He was suffering from diabetes and Chikungunya over the last few weeks

Bengaluru: A head constable attached to Banaswadi traffic police station committed suicide by hanging himself at his house in Rajajinagar police quarters early Friday. The head constable, identified as Mayanna K.M., 54, was suffering from diabetes and Chikungunya over the last few weeks.
According to his colleagues, he was admitted to the Suguna Hospital on Dr. Raj Kumar Road in Rajajinagar for his ailments and got discharged two days ago. But when he went for a check-up on Thursday, it was alleged that the doctor told Mayanna that he might lose his hand in an amputation operation.This left him depressed and he took the extreme step, his family members told police.
On returning home after the checkup, he waited for his family members to fall asleep and hanged himself to a ceiling fan between 3.30 am and 4 am, the police said. There was no suicide note, police said.
Mayanna was the sole bread winner of the family and is survived by wife, two daughters and a son. Mayanna hailed from Ramanagara district and his colleagues said he was a duty conscious policeman. The body was shifted to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem, after which it was handed over to the family members. Police have registered a case of unnatural death.
