Road along Adyar river puts off activists
Activists have cried foul over the alleged violation of Coastal Regulation Zone norms
Chennai: With the Chennai corporation laying what it calls as a “pathway” for a length of 1.2 km along Adyar river, activists have cried foul over the alleged violation of Coastal Regulation Zone norms.
Using a wet mix of concrete, the corporation has laid the ‘pathway’ along the banks of Adyar river from Fortis Malar Hospital on Thiru Vi Ka Bridge till Kotturpuram. On Thursday, workers were hurriedly fencing the parapet wall of the corporation maintained portion of the Thiru Vi Ka Bridge, using asbestos sheets. “Senior corporation officials maintain that it is not a road. The banks of the road are supposed to be muddy mound,” said activist Nityanand Jayaraman. On-site supervisors spoke of a laser show and colourful lighting coming up on the Adyar bank. The laser show is likely to be for the benefit of the foreign delegates visiting the city during GIM.
