Metro rail apologises to Sikh youth in Chennai

He was asked to remove his turban by security guards
Chennai: The Chennai Metro Rail Limited on Thursday tendered an apology to a Sikh youth, who was asked to remove his turban by security guards at the Vadapalani metro station on Tuesday night.
“After doing all the scans, the security person points at my turban and asks me to remove my cap. I was shocked. I thought Chennai has actually changed and finally we are moving on as a city and be more accepting of different cultures and races,” Tandeep Singh posted on his Facebook page.
He further said: “Now I may not look like it, but I’m a true blue Chennaiite (Madrasi to most of India). I have spent the most part of my life in this city. This city has been a home for my family and me. I’m really glad Chennai is finally getting a metro rail network. I never had the chance to use the current line, until late last night.”
But the guard at the Vadapalani station, was not in mood to help him live up to his expectations. He asked Tandeep Singh to remove the turban.
Before the scene turned into a nasty confrontation other staff intervened and allowed Tandeep to proceed. “I don’t blame the security guy for this instance, it is nothing but pure ignorance. CMRL you are at fault here, you need to educate your staff more about such issues,” he said further.
When contacted a CMRL official said an apology has been tendered to Tandeep. Also, steps will be taken to sensitise the guards so that such incidents are not repeated, he said.
