Karnataka: Gajapayana begins today
Mysuru: With Gajapayana, the journey of Dasara jumbos set to begin on Friday, Travel agents association of Mysuru submitted a representation to Tourism Minister R.V. Deshpande on Thursday urging him not to call Dasara a simple one but name it Traditional Dasara.
The first batch of Elephants Arjuna, Abhimanyu, Balarama, Chaithra, Cauvery and Vikram will arrive from their respective camps at Aranya Bhavan in Mysuru on Friday. In the representation, Prashanth B. S. of the association said, “70 percent of people depend on tourism in Mysuru.
The revenue earned by the district administration percolates to farmers of villages. We make 20 percent of the entire year’s business during this period. By calling it a simple Dasara, we will turn away nearly 50 percent of tourists.”
“Mysuru is witnessing several centenary year celebrations including the centenary of University of Mysuru. It has also been declared the cleanest city by the Union government recently. Flight connectivity has resumed with Alliance Air operating flights from Mysuru. So we have a reason to celebrate. It is time to promote our tourism,” Mr Prashanth said.
