Hyderabad set to get less water

The remaining 45 MGD supply of Krishna Phase 3 will commence from October 2015

Hyderabad: Water supply to the city is likely to be curtailed in the coming months as the levels in the reservoirs that supply Hyderabad are steadily depleting due to the severe drought-like condition.

Several areas in the core city and the merged municipalities presently receive water once in five days or twice in a week. The affected localities include Sanathnagar, Lalapet, Kukatpally, Hitec City and Gachibowli – the 12 merged municipalities that don’t have sufficient storage tanks.

Sources said that after October and up to the onset of the next monsoon, supply will be curtailed and certain areas may receive water once in seven-10 days. There will also be no increase in supply even after the commission of the Godavari scheme, which is likely to start in December.

Water Board executive director M. Satyanarayana said, “The present water level of Singur reservoir is 512.848 m; its capacity is 2.06 TMC. Out of the four phases of Manjeera, 120 MGD is being drawn and this can serve the city for two-and-a-half months. If lesser quantity is drawn from Singur, it will serve the city for six months, as part of the contingency plan. However, after March 2016 , the withdrawal from Singur will become zero.”

The Board’s plan is to
Draw water from Godavari Phase 1, which is likely to commence from December 2015 . The total Godavari project is of 172 MGD.

Supplement supply from Krishna Phase 3, already 45 of 90 MGD is being pumped into the city, the remaining 45 MGD will commence from October 2015 onwards. The Metro Board is working on a plan to draw another 10 MGD from Krishna Phase 3, a total of 55 MGD will be pumped into the city in a month’s time.

“The present level of Nagarjunasagar is 509.9 m, if the level goes below 505 feet, vertical pumps will be installed. Till date there is no scarcity of drinking water supplies from the present source, and the Board is confident of supply for the coming three months,” added Board officials.
