Eight farmers commit suicide in Telangana

In Warangal district, four farmers committed suicide, two of them aged 25 and 27 years

Hyderabad: As many as eight farmers committed suicide on Thursday owing to their inability of repay crop loans. Four of these suicides were reported from Warangal district, three from Karimnagar and one from Medak district.

K. Vithal, 47, a farmer in Sangaipet village of Medak district, had loans totalling Rs 3.5 lakh, of which Rs 3 lakh had been borrowed private lenders.

He had drilled borewells in his two-acre farm recently but could not strike water. Finding no way forward, Vithal hanged himself from a tree near his farm.

In Karimnagar district, three farmers — Y. Prabhakar Reddy, 46, Gangarajam, 45, and Y. Rajamallaiah, 45 — drank pesticide and ended their lives as their crops had dried up due to lack of rains. Each of them had loans in excess of Rs 2 lakh; Prabhakar Reddy owed private lenders Rs 5 lakh.

In Warangal district, four farmers committed suicide, two of them aged 25 and 27 years. Among the deceased were Azmeera Sonayya, 35, of Jeevantrampally, B. Ayyalam, 40 of Cheryal mandal and Y. Raju, 25, of Potaram village.

K. Raju, 27, and his wife attempted suicide in Jaggannapet village in Mulug division. While K. Raju succumbed, his wife was saved and is admitted in hospital.
